SIU Faculty Members Receive Grants to Study Lung Disease

Posted on: Thursday, 22 September 2005, 21:00 CDT

Three faculty members at Springfield's Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have received a total of $150,000 in grants from the American Lung Association to study lung disease and lung health.

Money for the grants comes from national and local funding, including proceeds from the lung association's 13th annual Spring Golf Classic that benefits the Richard H. Moy Pulmonary Research Fund at SIU.

Patricia Hopkins-Price, research assistant professor of pulmonary medicine, was awarded an $80,000 grant to study the role of obesity on asthma. The study will follow people who have asthma and are obese and participating in a weight-loss program to see if their asthma improves as they lose weight.

Hopkins-Price's research may lead to the development of new treatments and ways of preventing asthma, SIU officials said.

Dr. Janak Koirala, assistant professor of infectious diseases, received a $35,000 grant to study a common infection - mycobacterium avium complex - that affects patients with lung disease and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The study will look at ways to improve patients' immune systems.

Dr. Akshay Sood, assistant professor of pulmonary medicine, will use his $35,000 grant to study the effectiveness of the Illinois Tobacco QuitLine in helping smokers quit. The toll-free QuitLine can be reached at (866) 784-8937.
