Daleview Care Center, a long-term care and rehabilitation center in Farmingdale, has expanded services for those suffering from lung problems.
The center said it's seen an increase in the number of admissions of patients with emphysema and recurrent pneumonia caused by smoking. One quarter of its residents are on oxygen.
Mary Ann Mangels, the center's administrator, said Daleview has created a program designed to tailor care to these patients and assure that they maximize their therapy sessions without causing undue exertion.
The center said a pulmonologist is setting up plans for patients with lung problems, complete with breathing exercises and chest physiotherapy, to keep them as active as possible.
Daleview also started a smoking cessation program with a psychiatrist and social workers to help residents and their families quit smoking.
