Nepal provides free treatment to helpless heart patients
KATHMANDU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Nepali government has provided free treatment services to the poor and helpless heart patients from various government hospitals, a senior Nepali official said here Sunday.
"Many of the rural people have to be victimized of heart diseases due to lack of necessary awareness and proper treatment facilities, so the government is committed to end the present condition," Kirti Nidhi Bista, vice chairman of the Council of Ministers and minister for Health and Population, said at a symposium entitled "Heart Diseases in Nepal".
There is the need to establish cooperation between the government and private sectors for the promotion of awareness of people about the heart problems, Bista noted.
"We need to promote public awareness to control increasing heart problems attributed to the lack of yoga exercises, unbalanced nutrition and unhygienic modern life ways in Nepal," he said.
The government has formulated a new policy for the control of non- communicable diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory disease, Bista revealed.
The symposium was jointly organized by the Nepal Heart Foundation and Nepal Heart Net, non-governmental organizations of Nepal, to mark the World Heart Day.
About 4 million people or 15 percent of the total population are suffering from heart diseases in Nepal, according to Bista.
