THE Sick Kids hospital is set to be replaced by a new multi- million-pound facility fit for the 21st century.

The hospital’s ageing home in Marchmont is to be closed after health chiefs agreed it was impossible to improve and expand services there.

The new hospital is expected to be built beside either Edinburgh Royal Infirmary or the Western General. The new set-up would allow doctors at the Sick Kids to work more closely with other hospital specialists in developing new services.

Health chiefs have been advised to review children’s services “as a matter of urgency” and commit to building the new site within eight years.

Experts have said the quality of care for children would be boosted if the hospital was situated near adult, maternity and neo- natal facilities.
