Open House Offers a Preview of Hospital's Emergency Unit

Posted on: Monday, 26 September 2005, 15:00 CDT

Sep. 24--It won't take a medical emergency to see the inner workings of the Reading Hospital emergency department on Sunday.

From 1 to 4 p.m., the hospital will hold an open house to show off its new, larger and better-equipped emergency unit, which will open Oct. 5.

Located on the lower level of N-Building, the new emergency department is the last level to open in the hospital's 387,000-square-foot addition. The Regional Cancer Center, Regional Heart Center, Joint Care Center and intensive care units opened earlier this summer.

Hospital officials said the facility is essential to meeting growing volume in emergency care. Last year, Reading Hospital had nearly 86,000 patient visits in the existing emergency unit, which is designed to handle 45,000 annual visits.

In addition to providing more space for emergency care, the design will allow for more expedient and better care, said Dr. Charles F. Barbera, the hospital's chairman of emergency medicine.

For example, caregivers will use a computerized, color-coded system for tracking patients from the time they check in. The colors will indicate patients who need to be treated immediately and which ones can wait. Also, the colors will show how long patients have been waiting and what medications they have been given or may need.

The new emergency department offers free valet parking around the clock as well as a dedicated parking area in the lower level of Fifth Avenue Garage.

In August, Reading Hospital was awarded Level II Trauma Center accreditation by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation. As of Oct. 5, all trauma-related cases will be handled in trauma-center treatment rooms within the new emergency department.
