Libra Foundation (assets of $191. 6 million : Established by the late philanthropist Elizabeth Noyce, the foundation provides summer camp scholarships to children in Portland, Lewiston and Bangor; owns the Portland Public Market; owns Pineland Farms, a business campus in New Gloucester; and contributes millions of dollars directly to organizations. Total giving: $16.1 million.

Maine Community Foundation (assets of $134.5 million): One of eight statewide community foundations in the country. It provides college scholarships for Maine students; runs the County Program to provide grants to local organizations selected by volunteers; and advises other nonprofits to help them work more effectively. Total giving: $10 million.

Maine Health Access Foundation (assets of $102. 1 million): Founded in April 2000 as part of the sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine to Anthem Insurance Companies. The foundation donates money to hospitals and other health care providers and groups that are working to improve the physical and mental health of Mainers. Total giving: $3.7 million.

Sandy RIver Charitable Foundation (assets of $36.9 million): Family trust founded by Archie W. Berry, who also founded three insurance companies. Berry had no connection with Maine, but his son, Archie W. Berry Jr., lives here. The foundation sends most of its funds to Third World countries, where it supports agricultural and other projects. Its Maine grants are funneled through the Maine Community Foundation, with a part interest in the County Program. Total giving: $2.9 million.

Banknorth Charitable Foundation (assets of $30.3 million): Corporate foundation supports financial literacy; affordable housing; job training; youth development; and community support programs that promote the arts, cultural enrichment and civic enhancement. Total giving: $3.3 million.
