Japan Govt Eyes Charging Firms for Asbestos Health Damage

Posted on: Tuesday, 27 September 2005, 18:00 CDT

Tokyo, Sept. 27 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government plans to force companies that have produced, processed and used asbestos to shoulder the costs of care for people suffering asbestos-related diseases, Jiji Press learned Tuesday.

The government has yet to draw up details, such as which industries will be targeted and what the sizes and ratios of the planned levies will be, informed sources said.

In some cases of asbestos-related illness, it is difficult to determine the clear cause-effect relationship between company and patient due partly to the latent period of tumors and other diseases.

The government thus intends to clarify the legal standpoint upon which it can seek compulsory contributions from relevant companies, the sources said.

The government plans to pay medical treatment costs to those suffering from tumors or other diseases stemming from asbestos when they do not have adequate insurance that covers work-related deaths and injuries. This will include families of employees at plants where asbestos was used and nearby inhabitants.

The government also plans to pay allowances to the families of those that have died from asbestos-related diseases.END
