Children's Hospital Boston Selects Siemens Technology for New Outpatient Care Facility

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

Children's Hospital Boston has selected a broad scope of Siemens' angiography and interventional cardiology technology for its new state-of-the-art outpatient care facility in Waltham, Mass. Ranked by both Child and U.S. News & World Report magazines* as the second leading pediatric hospital in the country, Children's Hospital Boston furnished its catheterization (cath) labs and interventional radiology suites with 10 systems from Siemens' AXIOM Artis line of angiography systems. Since installation, the facility has experienced significant improvements to its integrated pediatric cath lab.

"Access to innovative state-of-the-art fluoroscopy technologies was at the top of our minds when looking to furnish our new catheterization laboratories," said Dr. John Triedman, medical director, Cardiac Catheterizations Laboratories, Children's Hospital Boston. "From the beginning, Siemens worked extensively with us to design a customized package of products and services to meet our unique requirements for a pediatric catheterization lab."

Children's Hospital Boston is utilizing an array of C-arm systems from Siemens' AXIOM Artis technology platform for electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, and pediatric applications. With flexible and ergonomic architecture, AXIOM Artis systems are easy to use and allow clinicians to optimally adapt the configuration for their intended use. AXIOM Artis systems also feature digital flat panel detector technology to deliver excellent contrast resolution, enabling clinicians to visualize the finest vascular structures in detail, such as those in infants.

To ensure the best image quality at a significantly reduced radiation dose, optimal exposure values are automatically selected via C.A.R.E. (Combined Application to Reduce Exposure), a Siemens' development in place to reduce radiation exposure for both patient and examiner. A specially designed copper prefiltration system automatically adjusts the filter strength during the exam to the density of the region of interest. Using "Careprofile," the collimator and filter can be adjusted to the region to be examined without radiation.

"From adults to pediatrics, Siemens is leading the way in developing cutting-edge technologies and solutions to benefit all patients," said Manfred Fink, vice president, Angiography and X-ray Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. "The flexibility of the AXIOM Artis platform provides a variety of configurations, including floor and ceiling mounted, biplane, swinglabs and large plate. With this array of configurations, all with full tableside functionality, physicians don't need to leave the tableside, a particularly important factor in pediatrics."

Children's Hospital Boston also will benefit from Siemens' AXIOM Sensis hemodynamic and electrophysiological recording system. Featuring Word-based reporting capabilities and a highly customizable database, it is scalable to both customer needs and budget. When combined with AXIOM Artis imaging systems, AXIOM Sensis provides the total integrated cath lab solution to help improve staff efficiency and optimize workflow, allowing physicians to spend less time on equipment and more time with patients.
