British Columbia to proceed with tobacco lawsuit
OTTAWA (Reuters) – The government of British Columbia,
armed with a Supreme Court decision backing its efforts to
recover smoking-related health care costs, said on Thursday it
would go ahead with its suit of tobacco firms now.
“My instructions are to proceed with the lawsuit, which we
will be doing immediately,” Dan Webster, counsel for the
government of British Columbia, told reporters in the lobby of
the Supreme Court.
The provincial government has said its claims against the
tobacco industry could amount to C$10 billion.
