Eisai Co., Japan's fourth-largest pharmaceutical maker, said Thursday that it will conduct clinical trials for a drug that treats a complication of diabetes at its medical research facilities in Ridgefield Park.

The drug, originated by Dainippon Pharmaceutical Co., is called AS-3201 and is in the last of three stages of clinical tests in the U.S. and Canada, the two companies said in a statement filed at the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

"If the trial proves successful, we will submit a new drug application in the United States, and then Eisai Inc. will be able to continue with the manufacturing and marketing of the product," spokeswoman Julia Lamm said. Eisai, the maker of the Aricept Alzheimer's treatment, has its U.S. corporate headquarters in Teaneck.

The company has a total of 450 employees at the two locations.

In Japan, Osaka-based Dainippon is conducting second-phase clinical trials of the drug with Kyorin Pharmaceutical Co., a Tokyo- based maker of prescription drugs and medical supplies.

The two companies say an estimated 3.6 million people in the U.S. and 1.7 million in Japan are affected by diabetic neuropathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the nervous system.

Dainippon Pharma will retain Japan rights to the drug, the statement said.

Separately, Eisai Inc. said Thursday it has entered an agreement with Pfizer Inc. for exclusive U.S. rights to promote the clot- preventing drug Fragmin.

Under the terms of the agreement, Eisai will assume responsibility for Fragmin's post-marketing studies and product distribution, as well as book all U.S. sales.
