The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is considering buying St. Vincent's Medical Center on Staten Island.
If it does make the move, North Shore-LIJ would be the sole operator of hospitals in that borough. St. Vincent's is owned by the bankrupt St. Vincent's Medical Centers, which is based in Manhattan.
St. Vincent's, which filed for bankruptcy in July, has looked to sell its Staten Island hospital, along with two hospitals in Queens - St. John's Queens Hospital and Mary Immaculate Hospital.
North Shore-LIJ has had preliminary discussions with St. Vincent's to better understand its plans for the hospital, its financial issues and the extent of renovations needed to preserve its long-term viability, said Terry Lynam, a spokesman for North Shore-LIJ.
He said North Shore-LIJ was doing due diligence, adding that it's pretty early in the process.
North Shore-LIJ already operates the only other hospital on Staten Island, Staten Island University Hospitals - which includes a north and south campus.
North Shore-LIJ's possible status as the sole provider on Staten Island has prompted concerns that it would become a monopoly there.
Dan McGowan, president of HIP Health Plan of New York, praised North Shore-LIJ as a health-care provider, but worried that one institution alone on Staten Island would mean an absence of competition.
They ought to have a choice, McGowan said of Staten Island residents.
North Shore-LIJ, meanwhile, said it is worried about the impact that the closing of a hospital on Staten Island could have.
Another reason we are concerned is, if it did close, the question is whether we could accommodate all the people on Staten Island, said Lynam.
Meanwhile, state Sen. John Marchi, a Republican from Staten Island, has called on the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp., which runs 11 hospitals, to acquire the hospital.
