American Kidney Fund, New York City Mission Society to Host HarlemFamily Health Fair Oct. 15

The American Kidney Fund and the New York City Mission Society will host the 6th annual Harlem Family Health Fair on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 12 noon to 5 p.m., at Minisink Townhouse, 646 Malcolm X Boulevard at 142nd Street.

African Americans have disproportionately higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease than the general population (diabetes and hypertension are the main causes of kidney disease).

"Kidney disease is a silent disease, showing symptoms only when it is well-advanced and a person's kidneys are near failure," said Tamara Ruggiero, director of Communications for the American Kidney Fund. "We are pleased to co-host a community event that gives people a chance to learn more about their possible risk for kidney disease and other illnesses."

The fair will feature free health screenings, healthy cooking and exercise demonstrations, presentations by local medical experts and live entertainment.

Medical professionals will hold educational sessions and distribute literature on the leading medical conditions affecting the African-American community -- not only kidney disease, but also high blood pressure and diabetes (the two leading causes of kidney disease), as well as high cholesterol, asthma and HIV.
