Public Health Offers 3 Dates for Flu Shots

Posted on: Monday, 3 October 2005, 15:00 CDT

Salt Lake County residents who desire a flu shot through the public-health clinics take note: The vaccinations will be available only during three day-long Saturday vaccination clinics at the Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 S. State. The cost for a flu shot is $20.

The clinic on Saturday, Oct. 15, will be for high-risk individuals, including children 6-23 months of age, anyone 65 or older, residents of long-term care facilities, people with chronic health problems (such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, lung disease or anemia), people with weakened immune systems, women who will be pregnant during the flu season, health- care workers and those who live with or take care of infants 6 months and younger.

The Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 clinics are for the general public.

People with no contra-indications to receiving the live-virus vaccine should take advantage of obtaining FluMist, a nasal flu vaccine licensed for healthy people ages 5-49. It is now available in Salt Lake Valley Health Department public health clinics, including City Clinic, South Main Clinic, Southeast Clinic and the Ellis R. Shipp Clinic. The cost is $29.

Those at high risk are encouraged to get a pneumonia vaccination if they haven't had one. The cost is $29. People who received the shot after age 65 do not need additional doses.

Those who have Medicare Part B coverage should bring their Medicare card with them so the health department can bill Medicare for the shots.
