Supervisors to Meet With Tracy Over Veterans Center Proposal

Oct. 5--STOCKTON -- San Joaquin County supervisors Tuesday said they'd meet with Tracy officials to discuss competing proposals for a regional Veterans Affairs center.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plan to start a joint committee with Tracy aimed at eliminating one of the bids for a regional veterans clinic and nursing home. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been shopping for a new center to serve an estimated 88,000 Central Valley veterans, including 44,000 in San Joaquin County.

Supervisors have criticized Tracy since the city made a bid for the project in its Gateway Business Park last month. The county has worked for more than a year on a proposal to put the center near San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp.

"Tracy is a Johnny-come-lately to this process," Supervisor Victor Mow said.

Tracy Mayor Dan Bilbrey said Monday that he would be interested in sitting on such a committee.

Ron Green, the county's veterans service officer, said Tuesday that it could be at least a few months before the committee meets. Mow and Supervisor Leroy Ornellas are expected to represent the county on the committee.
