Ohio State University Medical Center First to Install Siemens Newest 16-Slice CT System

Posted on: Thursday, 6 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

Providing the advanced imaging capabilities required for today's medical care, Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) University Hospital East has become the first medical facility in the U.S. to install Siemens Medical Solutions' SOMATOM(R) Emotion 16 computed tomography (CT) system. With 16-slice technology and a comprehensive set of clinical applications in a compact package, the SOMATOM Emotion 16 enables community hospitals and diagnostic imaging centers (DIC) to benefit from high-level CT imaging.

"CT has become a pivotal modality to any hospital or outpatient facility," said Michael V. Knopp, M.D., Ph.D, chairman and professor of radiology, Department of Radiology College Medicine, Ohio State University Medical Center. "The Emotion 16 allows us to put in a very small footprint all the capabilities which we want to combine for a very efficient, effective, and state-of-the-art CT environment."

University Hospital East is a partner hospital of OSUMC, one of the most comprehensive health science facilities in the United States, nationally recognized for programs in heart care, cancer, orthopedics, organ transplantation, rehabilitation, women's services and neuroscience. As a full service community-based hospital with a legacy of more than 100 years of caring for east Columbus, Franklin County and neighboring counties, the installation of the SOMATOM Emotion 16 provides access to advanced clinical applications and increased workflow.

The SOMATOM Emotion 16 is an air-cooled system that combines a gantry rotation speed of up to 0.5 seconds and 16-slice 0.6 sub-millimeter imaging technology for advanced diagnostic imaging. Along with its economical purchase price, low life-cycle costs and a minimal space requirement of under 200 square feet, the SOMATOM Emotion 16 provides a total CT solution to community hospitals and DIC with limited budgets or space considerations.

"Building upon the success of the SOMATOM Emotion product line, the Emotion 16 continues Siemens' tradition of meeting the needs of medical professionals today and tomorrow with faster, more accurate, and efficient CT capabilities," said Bernd Ohnesorge, vice president, CT Division, Siemens Medical Solutions. "Encompassing all of the advances required in medical imaging, the SOMATOM Emotion 16 will allow OSUMC to drive new CT applications into broad patient care."

The SOMATOM Emotion 16 provides a comprehensive set of clinical applications, including syngo(R) LungCARE CT with Nodule Enhanced Viewing and syngo Colonography with Polyp Enhanced Viewing for the computer-supported visualization of lung lesions and colon polyps.

The SOMATOM Emotion line has been proven with nearly 3,500 installations worldwide, placing it among the most successful product lines in CT history.
