Oct. 6--Health insurance payments from 1,745 Missouri families rolled in to the Department of Social Services this week, preserving medical coverage for thousands under the state's Children's Health Insurance Program.
Deborah Scott, the department's spokeswoman, said the additional payments brought the total number of families who had paid the new premiums to 13,875 and the total number of children who would retain coverage to 28,564. As of Tuesday, 10,404 families had not paid the premiums.
Those families, which represent 17,015 children, lost health coverage through CHIP on Saturday. They have until Nov. 30 to pay the monthly premium to restore coverage without reapplying to the program. CHIP is a federal-state program that provides medical coverage for children in moderate-income families who do not have access to affordable health insurance.
A law that took effect in August requires those in the program with incomes of more than 150 percent of the poverty level to pay monthly premiums.
