Webcast Explores Disparities, Health Education Research

PUBLIC health professionals can learn about the role that transdisciplinary health education research can play in eliminating disparities via a free webcast.
The webcast, posted on the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Kaisernetwork.org site, features sessions from the “Inaugural Health Education Research Disparities Summit: Health Disparities and Social Inequities,” which was held in Alexandria, Va., in August. The summit, sponsored by the Society for Public Health Education, included presentations and discussions with health leaders from across the country, who addressed racial and ethnic health disparities through the lens of health behavior dissemination, research and implementation.
“Data that are gathered with the community and grounded in the community’s specific needs are essential for eliminating health disparities,” said summit participant Nina Wallerstein, DrPH, of the University of New Mexico, “As researchers, we need to do a better job of communicating the strength that community members bring to disparities research and to forge closer collaboration between research and practice.”
Meeting participants discussed topics such as gaps in research on eliminating health disparities, effective research dissemination and the use of community-based participatory research. Participants also broke into work groups and came up with a set of questions that will be used to develop a research agenda.
As a next step, the Society for Public Health Education will circulate the list of research questions for additional comments and input.
