BCBSNC Is Named One of North Carolina's Most Family-Friendly Companies

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) today announced that Carolina Parent has designated it as one of the state's top 40 family-friendly companies. In its September issue, Carolina Parent released a salute to its "Family-Friendly 40" list. BCBSNC was one of this year's 40 designees, an honor the company received for the sixth consecutive year.
According to the article, the list honors businesses that make life easier for North Carolina's working parents. To receive the designation, companies must be nominated by employees on the basis of outstanding policies that help workers thrive at both work and at home. Final selections are based on a combination of employee testimonials and an overall review of the companies' family-friendly benefits.
BCBSNC employee, Robin Barnhill, reported her delight with the support that the company displayed after the birth of her first child. "After that experience, I wanted other parents to know the benefits and support they could receive from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina," she said.
According to her testimonial, Barnhill's efforts to extend support to other parents at BCBSNC resulted in a number of progressive programs that the company now offers to its employees, under the umbrella program ParentLife. These programs help to put prospective parents, new parents and working parents in touch with one another and form a vast network of social support. These incentives are examples of family-friendly criteria for which the magazine looks for in its potential honorees.
Other BCBSNC benefits that help working parents adjust to meeting the demands of both family and work are: health, dental and vision insurance; tuition reimbursement; adoption expense reimbursement; child-care resources and referral services; flextime; long-term care insurance; compressed workweeks; telecommuting options; sick leave bank/sharing; phase-back for new moms; lactation facilities; concierge services; a wellness program; and much more.
BeeBee Thomas, an occupational case manager at BCBSNC, also recounts in the article her appreciation for the support system and family-friendly benefits offered by her employer. "I want to be and I am an involved parent. Yet, I love being a nurse. My job at BCBSNC allows me to continue in my profession and to be all that I want to be as a mother."
