Asthma Home Intervention Cost-Effective

Posted on: Tuesday, 11 October 2005, 21:00 CDT

New data from the National Institutes of Health in Washington suggest home-based environmental intervention asthma programs are cost-effective.

The two-year study, conducted at seven centers across the United States, was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and show such intervention programs help inner-city children who have moderate to severe asthma.

The program successfully decreased allergen levels in the home and reduced asthma symptoms. The data also show the cost would be substantially lower if the interventions were implemented in a community setting, and that they would be as cost-effective as many drug interventions.

Study results are available online in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
