Bosnia Introduces Measures Against Avian Flu
Excerpt from report by Bosnian public broadcaster BHTV1 on 10 October
[Presenter] The avian flu virus is approaching our country. An emergency centre has been set up, while the citizens are advised to get vaccinated for flu. This is a way to increase the immunity against avian flu. There is no special vaccine for this type of flu.
[Reporter] We learnt from the Bosnia-Hercegovina Veterinary Bureau that there was still no reason for concern. Local experts agree that our country is not on the route of migratory birds. Two task forces have been formed at the state level in order to monitor the avian flu situation.
[Veterinary expert] According to my information, only the poultry are at risk at the moment.
[Reporter] Avian flu is an acute infectious disease, which leads to a disease of humans only in extraordinary circumstances. The virus is easily transmitted by migratory birds, particularly ducks.
[Expert] The only ways to resist the virus are immunity, isolation and vaccine. The vaccine is non-existent, immunity is relative, while isolation is pretty difficult.
[Reporter] The scientists warn of the need for special measures in case of the virus spread, such as putting down birds and poultry in a certain areas, as well as raising awareness of citizens.
[Passage omitted]
[Reporter] Bosnia-Hercegovina has banned import of poultry from 12 countries. Some EU member states have already requested from poultry owners to keep their poultry away from open areas, in order prevent contact with birds and wild ducks. In our country, marshes, such as Hutovo blato, are under close supervision.
