Crater Flu Vaccine Arrives

Posted on: Thursday, 13 October 2005, 06:00 CDT

The Crater Health District has received a supply of flu vaccine, says the district's director, Dr. Michael Royster.

Anyone interested in a flu shot can call his or her local health department beginning Monday, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. When the appointment slots are full, no more calls will be accepted.

The Crater Health District includes the cities of Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg and the counties of Dinwiddie, Greensville, Prince George, Surry and Sussex.

Those interested in flu-shot appointments should call the following numbers:

* Dinwiddie, 469-3771

* Emporia or Greensville County, (434) 348-4210

* Hopewell, 458-1297

* Petersburg, 863-1652, ext. 216 or 315

* Prince George, 733-2630

* Surry, (757) 294-3185

* Sussex, (434) 246-8611

Everyone is eligible to receive a flu shot this year. The following groups are strongly urged to receive a flu shot:

Children 6 months to 23 months; adults 65 and older; those 2-64 years of age with underlying chronic medical conditions; all women who will be pregnant during flu season; residents of nursing homes and long-term-care facilities; children 2-18 on chronic aspirin therapy; health-care workers involved in direct patient care; and out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children under 6 months.

Royster also urges people to: use a tissue to cover the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing; dispose of the tissue immediately and wash hands thoroughly. Also, frequently wash hands with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds; rinse and dry hands with a disposable towel; use a towel to turn off the faucet; stay home from work or school for 5 to 7 days if you have flulike symptoms; and refrain from visiting a nursing home or high-risk individuals if you have flulike symptoms.
