Study Shows Vast Majority of Americans Likely to Become Fat, Diet Center of Canton Poised to Help

Posted on: Thursday, 13 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

CANTON, Mich., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study suggests the obesity problem in the U.S. is more serious than previously thought. The Framingham Heart Study, an ongoing longitudinal study in Framingham, Mass. supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), followed Americans for three decades and found 90% of men and 70% of women will become overweight. Even those who made it well into adulthood without a weight problem are not without risk. Half of these men and women ultimately became overweight. The results of this study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, show obesity may be a greater problem than indicated by studies that look at a cross-section of the population at one point in time.

"The findings show we could have an even more serious degree of overweight and obesity over the next few decades," said NHLBI Director Dr. Elizabeth G. Nabel, in an October 3rd press release from the institute.

Kristyn Austriaco, registered dietitian for Diet Center(R), notes overweight and obese people are much more likely to suffer numerous health risks, including higher blood pressure and cholesterol to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.

"These results should serve as a wake up call for everyone, not just those who are already overweight," said Austriaco.

Diet Center of Canton combats obesity with individually tailored programs and products to help clients lose weight and avoid becoming one of the Americans this recent study identified.

"To ensure healthy weight loss, we do body composition analysis every 10 pounds or every four weeks to confirm clients are losing weight from their fat and not from their lean muscle mass," says Diet Center of Canton owner Linda Aubuchon. Initial consultations, which include body composition analysis, are free.

Aubuchon opened Diet Center of Canton August 1st after spending 12 years in corporate America. She lost 70 pounds two and a half years ago and decided she wanted to take her business knowledge and put it to work in something she's very passionate about.

Diet Center(R), headquartered in Akron, Ohio, has been a recognized leader in the weight loss industry for 32 years. All Diet Center franchisees in the United States and Canada take pride in the organization's history of professionally supervised, nutritionally sound weight loss, weight management and behavior modification programs.
