Children's Health Month: Symposium on Communicating Risk
Posted on: Thursday, 13 October 2005, 09:01 CDT
News Advisory:
With National Children's Health Month underway, the nation's oldest consumer advocacy organization is calling for a long overdue discussion about the media's role in communicating health risks to children. The National Consumers League will gather a group of consumer advocates, local and national media, researchers, government policy makers and regulators, and industry representatives to address important topics within the challenges of communicating children's health risks via major media. How often does the public get access to adequate context and unbiased research results? What steps can we take to improve communications of complicated and often emotionally charged topics? Using case studies and research on issues including children's vaccines, environmental contaminants in the food supply, and childhood obesity, panelists will highlight obstacles to effective risk communication. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
