Oct. 14--Kansas Orthopaedic Center has outgrown its two buildings in west Wichita and will break ground Saturday on a new, $8.5 million facility that will house everything in one location.
The proposed facility at K-96 and Ridge Road will feature a 32,000-square-foot clinic and 15,000-square-foot surgery center. That nearly doubles the current clinical space and increases surgery capacity by a third.
The new site, slated to open in October 2006, will replace two leased facilities at 1507 W. 21st St. and 7570 W. 21st St.
"We outgrew this facility and we went to a second site until we could figure out what to do," said center administrator Liz Tolberd. "This (new facility) will allow us to bring in a couple more physicians. Right now, we have absolutely no space to do that."
The new site also will allow the center to add another operating room, bringing its total to four.
The physician-owned outpatient practice was founded in 1978. It employs nine physicians, all fellowship trained, who specialize in at least one orthopedic subspecialty, such as hand, spine, or foot and ankle.
Kansas Orthopaedic bought 36 of the 55 undeveloped acres at the site and plans to sell off parcels to other businesses to create Northridge Village, the developer said.
"I think they'd like other medical-type facilities, enjoy a little bit of retail, possibly a hotel-type of business," said Jim Keusler, project manager for Hutton Construction Corp. "It's all still being finalized, and it's certainly up to negotiation."
