Jakarta: A 56-year-old suspected bird flu patient died on Friday (14 October) in Sulianti Saroso Hospital in Sunter, North Jakarta. The patient had been treated at the hospital since 11 October for a severe cough, acute respiratory problems and a high temperature, all symptoms of bird flu.
The patient, a resident of Jl. Karet in Pasar Baru Timur, Central Jakarta, was transferred from city-owned Tarakan Hospital in Central Jakarta. Doctors suspected he was infected with avian influenza because he kept two chickens at his house. "Based on our diagnosis, he was a suspected bird flu patient," said a spokesman for Sulianti Saroso Hospital, Ilham Patu, on Saturday.
This was the ninth suspected bird flu patient to die since the recent outbreak began. As of Saturday, there were four other suspected bird flu patients being treated at the hospital.
