HMC Introduces Healthy Returns(SM) Therapeutic Alerts to Optimize Health Outcomes; New Program Improves Patient Compliance With Prescribed Plan of Care

Posted on: Monday, 17 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

Health Management Corporation (HMC), a leading national health and disease management company, today announced the availability of Healthy Returns Therapeutic Alerts, a care management program that addresses gaps in care between recognized health guidelines, the physician's plan of care and actual patient behavior. Through the use of this program, health plans can improve patient compliance with the prescribed plan of care, strengthen relationships with physicians and optimize overall health outcomes for members enrolled in care management programs.

Developed using HMC's Healthy Returns(SM) System, a Web-based platform that houses more than 1,700 evidence-based clinical and pharmaceutical guidelines, the Therapeutic Alerts program generates alerts for patient safety issues in one of two categories--clinical non-compliance and medication compliance.

Clinical non-compliance alerts notify participants when they are overdue for a test, procedure or screening as directed by nationally accepted health guidelines. Medication, or pharmacy, compliance alerts warn physicians about issues surrounding a patient's drug therapy, including:

-- drug-drug interactions

-- drug-condition interactions

-- drug over-utilization

-- drug under-utilization.

For physicians, non-compliance is a major obstacle to treating patients, particularly because many patients often overstate actual compliance rates. According to a recent poll conducted by Harris Interactive, one in three U.S. adults that take prescription drugs on a regular basis report they are often or very often non-compliant with their treatment regimen.

"Therapeutic Alerts tackles widespread compliance and safety issues that are experienced universally across all populations, regardless of age, location or health status," said Samuel Cramer, M.D., vice president of clinical programs at HMC. "By leveraging clinical and pharmacy claims data to help solve these problems, health plans can increase compliance with the physician's plan of care, optimize outcomes for members and achieve demonstrable results."
