Briefs: Free Seminar on Heart Disease for Women Planned

LIFE Senior Services will present a free seminar about how heart diseases and strokes affect women.
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States, a media release states. Women have a lower survival rate than men after a heart attack and are less likely to be diagnosed properly or treated for the problems as aggressively as men are treated.
The seminar will be presented by Barbara Hannah, assistant professor of nursing at the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing. It will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 in the training center at LIFE Senior Services, 5950 E. 31st St.

Local volunteers sought for Blue Thumb training
Volunteers are needed to join local stream monitoring teams that collect and test chemical, biological and physical aspects of stream health.
Some 22 streams in the Tulsa area are monitored by about 75 Citizen Blue Thumb Volunteers, a media release states.
New volunteers must attend training from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 3 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5.
The training class can accommodate a maximum of 25 people, and a $10 refundable deposit is required to reserve a place.

Free stroke screenings available in Broken Arrow
Life Line Screening will provide screenings in Broken Arrow to help people reduce the risks of having a stroke.
The screenings will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday and will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5750 S. Elm Place, a media release states.
Screenings use ultrasound technology to scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which are a strong predictor of heart disease. Also, a bone-density screening to assess for risks for osteoporosis will be offered.
A complete vascular screening costs $109, and addition of the osteoporosis screening raises the total cost to $129.

Luncheon, style show to benefit local organization
Think pink at this year’s “Pink Ladies” Luncheon and Style Show benefiting Tulsa Project Woman, a local breast cancer treatment charity.
The event is set from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bistro at Seville, 101st Street and Yale Avenue.
A fashion show is being sponsored by Donna’s Fashions, with many breast cancer survivors modeling during the show.
There will be complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and 10 percent of the Bistro’s daily sales will be donated to Tulsa Project Woman.
