AMA Reiterates Call for FDA Regulation of Antimicrobials in Consumer Products

CHICAGO, Oct. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The American Medical Association (AMA) has long been concerned about antimicrobials in consumer products and commends the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for holding hearings to discuss the benefits and risks of antimicrobial products for consumer use.
"The recent popularity of antibacterial soaps and washes has grown significantly even though we have limited research showing their efficacy, but there is science to suggest that the use of some of these antimicrobials in consumer products can be linked to development of antibiotic resistance," said Ronald M. Davis, M.D., AMA Trustee.
The AMA adopted policy on this issue in 2000, and published its findings in the peer-reviewed journal, Archives of Dermatology. At that time, the AMA said that until data emerge to show antimicrobials in consumer products are effective at preventing infection and have no detrimental effect on public health, they should be avoided.
"We urge the FDA to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of antimicrobials in consumer products and strongly urge FDA regulation of them where resistance against antimicrobials has been demonstrated. In order to learn more, we must increase research on the use of common antimicrobials and the impact on antimicrobial resistance," said Dr. Davis.
