Woman's Hospital Installs Skylight's ACCESS Interactive Patient System -- Offering Modern Entertainment and Family-Centered Communication in Patient Rooms

Posted on: Monday, 24 October 2005, 06:00 CDT

Woman's Hospital, a leader in women's specialty care since 1968, has added yet another enhancement to enrich the state-of-the-art, patient-centered environment they have become known for. Patient room televisions at Woman's have been modernized and transformed with the ACCESS Interactive Patient System (formerly GetWellTV) from San Diego-based Skylight Healthcare Systems. The service turns existing hospital television sets into interactive media centers, offering customized entertainment, communication and education centers.

With Skylight's ACCESS, the television sets in patient rooms have become communication centers where patients and family members can receive key information about the hospital, the medical staff and their stay; manage their room comfort with direct contact to appropriate departments throughout the hospital; and access an extensive library of educational videos on new baby care, specific conditions and at-home treatment plans, right from the bedside. Patients and their families have on-demand access at any time, using a specialized, integrated remote control and a custom wireless keyboard, which are provided in each room.

With Skylight's ACCESS Interactive Patient System, patients and family members are empowered to directly reach out for what they want, when they want. How do I get in touch with housekeeping? What's the visiting hour policy for siblings? Patients can make these requests and access this information on their own, at the touch of a button. "This amount of patient control increases patient satisfaction, and aids nursing staff as well -- allowing them more time to provide direct patient care and comfort, which will ultimately lead to better recovery," said Patricia Johnson, vice president of nursing.

Entertainment and internet options are part of the system as well, including an extensive selection of feature films on demand, digital music, games and web access. "At Woman's, we understand the importance of having family and friends close by during a patient's hospital stay. And, we try to make our hospital rooms as inviting as possible," said Teri Fontenot, President and CEO of Woman's Hospital, and recently named in Modern Healthcare as one of the top 25 women in healthcare. "By keeping patients connected to their family and friends, and offering information and amenities, the ACCESS system can really enhance the overall patient experience and help patients and families feel more comfortable."

"By providing a modern system to keep patients entertained, connected and empowered, Woman's Hospital's decision to install Skylight's ACCESS system is keeping with its mission to foster innovation and provide an advance family-centered approach to care," commented David Schofield, CEO of Skylight Systems. "We are honored that Skylight Healthcare was chosen by such a highly recognized leader to help enhance the patient and family experience," Schofield finished.
