Regional Split for Views on NHS Care

Posted on: Monday, 24 October 2005, 09:01 CDT

SATISFACTION with the NHS varies across England with those living in London the most negative about their care, a report says today.

Analysis of patient surveys by the Healthcare Commission found that people from the north-east of England were the most positive in their attitudes to the health service.

And older people also voiced more satisfaction with their care compared to younger people, the report said.

The study was based on detailed analysis of five of the watchdog's previously-published patient surveys, covering 568 NHS organisations and more than 312,000 patients across England.

The commission concluded that the differences in the way people responded to the survey could be partly explained by consistent factors such as age, where in the country they live and their state of health.

The report also found that black and ethnic minority groups, particularly from South Asian countries, were more negative about parts of their care than other groups.

The report said London hospitals tended to have relatively high numbers of temporary staff, which might have an impact on patient experience.

The Healthcare Commission said that more analysis would be needed.

Chief Executive Anna Walker said: "Understanding variations in experience will help the NHS to improve services in the areas of greatest need
