Art and exercise are two of those things that set us apart from the birds and the beasts. Most wild creatures spend most of their waking hours eating or searching for food. They get plenty of exercise in the process.

If you've had too little exercise or you just want to indulge your creativity for a few hours each week, the Knoxville Arts and Fine Crafts Center in the Candy Factory at World's Fair Park has a tempting schedule of offerings.

New this fall, Director Cathy Maples said, is a class called Nia, offered by fitness instructor Karen Nolt on Monday and Thursday evenings.

Nia combines movements from yoga, tai chi, tae kwon do, aikido, ja, modern dance and other movement forms for a total cardiovascular conditioning workout. Wednesday morning yoga and Tuesday evening yogalates classes, a combination of yoga and Pilates, are taught by taught by Sandy Larson.

Other adult classes include drawing and watercolor with popular instructor Susie Holt, who teaches on weekday mornings.

Adult oil painting is taught by Mark Smothers on Monday evenings in two six-week sessions, the next one beginning in late October.

Beginner and intermediate pottery classes are taught by Jackie Mirzadeh in a variety of day and evening sessions that last for eight weeks each.

Anna Gundlach teaches adult sculpture and tile design in day and evening classes. Session one is under way, but a second session begins Oct. 27.

Batik classes taught by Nancy Roberson will be offered in morning or evening sessions during October and November.

Looking for a way to make some Christmas presents without embarking on a project that will take weeks or months? The adult jewelry workshops taught by Fran Pyle in October might be just the thing.

Weaving, long a popular activity at the fine-arts center, will be offered in classes taught by Roberson, beginning next week.

The Arts and Fine Crafts Center also offers a variety of classes for preschoolers, children and youths, ranging from activity days during school breaks to sculpture, drawing and crafts.
