Thai gov't to vaccinate 150,000 workers against influenza
BANGKOK, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- In an effort to prevent the possible reassortment between human influenza and the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the Social Security Office has decided to allocate a budget worth 45 million bhats (1.13 million US dollars) for buying influenza vaccine for about 150,000 people in high risk areas.
Labor Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said Friday the workers in poultry farms and slaughter houses in 21 provinces would be given priority to receive the vaccines, the Nation newspaper reported Saturday.
The provinces are on the list of avian flu epidemic, such as Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan, and Nonthaburi.
The workers were considered as having high risk to catch avian flu from the birds at work while being susceptible to human flu during this coming cold season as well, he said.
The ministry was expected to conclude all the details of the vaccination project next week, he added.
