Locomotive hospital of China's rescue team to Pakistan gives first surgery operation

BALAKOT, Pakistan, Oct. 31 (Xinhua)- - The 23-year Pakistani Yasir Mehol lied on the operation desk with bright shadowless lamp hanging over. Around him, four Chinese doctors were quickly yet skillfully proceeding operation of the abscess behind his right ear.

On Monday morning right after the locomotive hospital of the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR) in Balakot was opened, Mehol came and became the first patient receiving surgery operation.

Mehol told Xinhua that he suffered from the pains in the abscess for the past few days, since most international rescue teams and local hospitals had no sufficient facilities for surgery operation.

The CISAR's locomotive hospital is composed of three medical tents for internal medicine, surgery and medical exam, respectively. Patients and doctors are required to take off shoes before entering the surgery tent, so that the hospital could be kept clean.

Bai Xiaodong, a surgery expert with the rescue team said the surgery room was equipped with a whole set of professional facilities, which could meet the standard for an aseptic operation.

Before and after Mehol had the operation, Chinese nurses splash disinfectants throughout the room. A doctor with the Afghanistan medical team visiting the hospital said the Chinese locomotive hospital is the best with most advanced equipment and high-quality staff.

Yang Zaocheng, vice-director of the CISAR and also a veteran doctor said the locomotive hospital could be compared with a medium size hospital in China. To give better medical service to the earthquake-hit people, the team also set up a specific medical exam system including X-ray, supersonic devices as well as AIDS- relevant test.

He revealed that the hospital would pick up water sample in rivers of Balakot, to find out the cause of the infective diarrhea reported in the region. A report on the epidemic control will be submitted to the World Health Organization and the Pakistani government.

A report by the Pakistani government showed that epidemic cases have been found in Balakot, including two measles, 17 tetanus and fast-spreading diarrhea.
