Diabetics' Blood Sugar Control and Cholesterol Levels Dramatically Improved By NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) and a Web-Based Education Program

Posted on: Tuesday, 1 November 2005, 12:00 CST

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Managed Care Physicians (NAMCP) and WorldDoc, Inc., a provider of integrated Care Management Systems, announced the preliminary results of a program for diabetes patients employed by Coast Hotel & Casinos, Inc., a long-time WorldDoc client. The study reveals that focusing a web-based diabetic education program on diabetic members significantly improved blood sugar control and lowered cholesterol levels among participants.

NAMCP has developed a NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) that helps diabetics understand their treatment goals. NAMCP collaborated with WorldDoc to integrate the NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) into WorldDoc's web- based platform. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) and a web-based education program that employs an electronic personal health record on control of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. WorldDoc used pharmacy claims data to identify 254 diabetics among the 5,345-employee population (4.8%). Ninety-one (35.8%) of the diabetics agreed to participate, and the remaining 163 were followed as the non-participant group.

First, clinical data was collected from the patients' medical provider and imported to the WorldDoc personal health records. Next, the diabetics completed the web based NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) indicating their activity level, diet, smoking and alcohol habits. Upon completion, the participants received defined goals for HgA1c (Hemoglobin A1c is a marker for blood sugar), blood pressure and cholesterol. In addition, as part of the diabetes program study, participants were offered electronic eVisits, in which the NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) result was securely communicated to a medical provider to for immediate intervention.

Six months after program intervention, the clinical data was re-evaluated. In the preliminary results, the participant group showed a reduction in Hg A1c from 8.0% to 7.3%. The non-participant group remained at 7.7%. The goal for diabetics is a HgA1c of less than 7.0%. In addition, the total cholesterol level decreased in the participant group (187 to 171 mg/dl) but increased in the control group (188 to 198 mg/dl). Similar results were seen in LDL (bad) cholesterol.

"The NAMCP Diabetes Patient Report Card(R) helps engage patients as active participants in their care and to achieve goals which will improve their health, and communicates these goals to patients and physicians," said Rahul Singal MD, President of WorldDoc. "Everyone is finally on the same page."

"The Diabetes Web-Based Educational Program conducted among Coast Casinos' employees proves that WorldDoc's model -- empowerment through personalized health information and goals -- helps people better manage their health," said Bill Williams MD, EVP of NAMCP.

"Coast Casinos was thrilled to see the diabetes program result in improved blood sugar control and cholesterol levels among our diabetic employees," said Bob Berglund, VP of Employee Benefits. "We anticipate the clinical improvement to result in a healthier population and contain healthcare expenditures."
