SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West: After Misleading Public With Deceitful Ad in San Francisco Chronicle, CPMC Agrees to Return to Bargaining Table

Posted on: Friday, 4 November 2005, 12:00 CST

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- After forcing 800 caregivers to remain on strike for over seven weeks, California Pacific Medical Center contacted the Federal Mediator today to request a return to the bargaining table with SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West. The hospital requested renewed bargaining on the same day that it ran a misleading advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle titled, "An Open Letter to Sal Rosselli." The ad erroneously claims that hospital accepted the patient care standards featured in the Federal Mediator's contract proposal.

No date has been set for the future bargaining, which will be facilitated by a Federal Mediator. This is the first time CPMC has requested to return to the bargaining table since it walked out of negotiations on August 9.

800 CPMC caregivers were forced to strike on September 13 for a Federal Mediator's compromise proposal for settlement that CPMC initially accepted, but later rejected. The proposal gives caregivers a real voice in staffing, an education fund, and the freedom to join a union without harassment and intimidation from management. All three contract issues have already been adopted by every major hospital system in Northern California, including Kaiser, Catholic Healthcare West, and Daughters of Charity. Most recently, Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland agreed to the same industry standard contract issues on October 28.

"Our caregivers look forward to the opportunity to bargain in good faith with Sutter/CPMC. The hospital misled the public by running a disingenuous ad in the San Francisco Chronicle today. Hopefully CPMC can rectify their recent actions by bargaining to end the strike they could have prevented seven weeks ago," said Sal Rosselli, President of SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West.

At a rally on Monday, Aaron Peskin, President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, urged Sutter/ CPMC to bargain in good faith. "Last week, Martin Brotman said that we should remain 'optimistic' about the strike, but I must admit that I am deeply saddened and baffled by Sutter," said Peskin. "I have lost my patience, and my colleagues and I demand that Sutter return to the bargaining table and work this out immediately."
