ProtoKinetix AAGP(TM) Cosmetic Applications Enhanced By Preservation of Adult Skin Cells

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 November 2005, 06:00 CST

ProtoKinetix, Inc. (OTCBB:PKTX) announces today that further tests of the effect of AAGP(TM) on skin cells demonstrate an ability to maintain and preserve the viability of adult skin cells. Prior results reported were done with embryonic fibroblast skin cells. The Company's testing has now progressed to the use of primary adult skin fibroblasts, which are the skin cells typically used for cosmetic research. After 4 days at 15 degrees C, the adult skin cells treated with AAGP(TM) (15 mg/ml) maintained 100% viability compared to only 10% survival of cells not treated. At 3 degrees C (refrigeration) for 4 days, 100% of the cells treated with AAGP(TM) (15mg/ml) survived versus less than 30% survival when not treated.

Additional experiments have been done using embryonic fibroblast skin cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to test the cells for oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by such irritants as the sun and plays a major role in aging as well as in a number of skin diseases such as cancer and psoriasis. We have reproduced this oxidative effect in the laboratory by exposing the cells to a solution of hydrogen peroxide in the presence and absence of AAGP(TM). In the absence of AAGP(TM), all of the cells were dead after 10 hours. Over the same period of time, the cells treated with AAGP(TM) had over a 70% survival rate.

Dr. John Todd, President and CEO of ProtoKinetix, says that our AAGP(TM) has two major effects. The first is that it works as an antifreeze in that it inhibits the formation of ice to a temperature of -15 degrees C. The second is that it exerts a strong protective effect over a wide range of temperatures on living cells. These latest interim results represent experimentation requested by a major cosmetic corporation.
