Singapore licenses new vaccine against rotavirus gastroenteritis in Children

SINGAPORE, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Singapore has licensed a new vaccine which is against rotavirus gastroenteritis among children under 5 years old, Channel NewsAsia reported on Monday.

Named Rotarix, the new vaccine was developed by the world famous pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and was tested in 11 polyclinics and three hospitals in Singapore.

The clinical trials involving some 9,000 subjects showed that the vaccine is "safe and relatively free of side effects," the report said, adding that 23 other countries has also approved the use of the vaccine.

Rotavirus gastroenteritis is a viral infection which causes severe diarrhea and kills half a million children worldwide every year.

According to the report, it is the first time that a major pharmaceutical company chooses to conduct large scale vaccine trials and have the vaccine licensed in Singapore before introducing it in the United States or Europe as usual.

Singapore has become active in participating in clinical trials as the country takes biomedical science as one of its growth engines and aims to become a regional biomedical hub.
