Dr. Albert G. Mulley and Dr. John E. Wennberg Honored at the Annual Picker Institute Awards for Excellence in Patient-Centered Care

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 November 2005, 12:00 CST

BOSTON, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Drs. Albert G. Mulley and John E. Wennberg, co-founders of the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making (FIMDM), have been recognized by the Picker Institute for lifetime achievements in the advancement of patient-centered care. In 1989, Drs. Wennberg and Mulley founded FIMDM and developed a concept known as Shared Decision-Making, which is based on the idea that more informed and involved patients make healthcare choices in line with their personal values and preferences, leading to improved outcomes, lower costs and higher patient satisfaction.

The Picker Institute is a recognized world leader in the areas of scientific measurement, improvement of the patient experience, and the promotion of patient-centered care. The Picker Institute Awards are made annually to recognize outstanding contributions to improving the lives of patients by making interaction with the healthcare system less stressful and more comfortable.

FIMDM is a non-profit organization that strives to strengthen the role patients play in selecting treatment options for their medical conditions. FIMDM has developed and maintains a broad library of educational videotapes, along with other Shared Decision-Making(R) materials, to help individuals identify their values and preferences, understand the risks and benefits of available treatment alternatives, and engage in more constructive dialogs with their physicians.

"We are truly honored to be recognized by such a prestigious organization that shares our vision for improving the quality of medical decisions -- giving patients the care they need and no less, and the care they want and no more," said Dr. Mulley.

"Today's healthcare system is complex -- our goal is to continue to help individuals navigate the system through the dissemination of objective, complete, and unbiased information," said Dr. Wennberg.

Dr. Mulley is Co-founder and Senior Medical Advisor of FIMDM, Chief of the General Medicine Division and Director of the Medical Practices Evaluation Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Associate Professor of Medicine and of Health Policy at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as an Overseer of Dartmouth Medical School, a Director of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and a Trustee of Dartmouth College.

Dr. Wennberg is Co-founder and Senior Policy Advisor of FIMDM, Director of the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth Medical School, and Peggy Y. Thomson Professor of Epidemiology and Professor of Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. He has been researching unwarranted variation in healthcare for more than 30 years and is Principal Investigator and Series Editor of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care.

About FIMDM

The primary mission of FIMDM is to help patients recognize when decisions are needed regarding medical tests, treatments or the management of long-term conditions, and to provide accurate, unbiased information about the potential risks and benefits of their options. FIMDM developed the concept of Shared Decision-Making, which forms the basis for Health Coaching services delivered by Health Dialog Services Corporation, a FIMDM partner since 1997.

About the Picker Institute

The Picker Institute, based in Boston with offices throughout Europe, is an independent nonprofit organization that promotes the advancement of patient-centered care, and the improvement of patients' experiences and interactions with their healthcare providers.

Established in Boston in 1994, the Picker Institute was the first to create scientifically valid nationwide surveys and databanks on patient- centered care, educating doctors and hospital staff on how they could improve service for their patients. The patient's perspective is now one of the most standard metrics of performance routinely measured by most healthcare organizations.

These dimensions are explored in the Institute's classic text, "Through the Patient's Eyes." To learn more about the Picker Institute, please go to http://www.pickerinstitute.org/.
