Falls are common and life-threatening among the elderly, and often occur in healthcare institutions where sick and weakened individuals are more at risk of falling. Of the 1.6 million seniors treated for falls-related injuries in 2002,10 percent of those injuries occurred in healthcare institutions.
In its "Falls" report, ECRI recommends that healthcare facilities implement comprehensive programs to help reduce the frequency and severity of patient falls. The report examines the causes of falls, identifies patients at risk, and offers advice on developing an interdisciplinary falls prevention program and responding to falls when they occur. The 19-page report also includes links to online tools designed to help healthcare facilities develop a falls prevention program.
For information about the report, contact ECRFs Sharon Murphy at (610) 825-6000, ext. 5145 or smurphy@ecri.org, or visit www.ecri.org.
