American Academy of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Prescribes SumTotal; 12,000 Physicians and Health Professionals Will Use SumTotal's Enterprise Suite for CME

Posted on: Thursday, 10 November 2005, 09:00 CST

SumTotal(TM) Systems (Nasdaq:SUMT), the largest provider of learning and business performance technologies and services, announced that The American Academy of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) has chosen the SumTotal Enterprise Suite to improve the knowledge and performance of AAO-HNSF's 12,000 physicians and health professionals by centralizing and modernizing continuing medical education (CME).

Members of the Academy -- the world's largest organization of ear, nose and throat specialists -- will access the new "AcademyU(TM)" learning management system (LMS) to enhance their professional credentials, maintain board certification requirements and learn about developments in their specialty areas. SumTotal will bring the benefits of distance learning directly to a member's medical practice, allowing them to spend more time providing quality care for patients while they build skills and competencies that qualify for American Medical Association (AMA) Physician's Recognition Award (PRA) category 1 CME credits. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) authorizes the AAO-HNSF to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

SumTotal will provide a centralized environment that combines online patient case studies, eBooks, quizzes and global research with blended instructor-led training courses ranging from diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of otolaryngologic disorders to new operative procedures, drugs and medical devices.

"This strategic learning initiative reflects our commitment to facilitating the advancement of the science and art of medicine through research, education, and advocacy," said J. David Osguthorpe, MD, AAO-HNSF Coordinator for Education. "SumTotal Enterprise Suite combines a solid backbone to deploy instructionally-sound content with the flexibility to create highly-specialized courses and customized learning plans."

"A physician's top priority is treating patients," said Don Fowler, SumTotal's interim CEO. "So the aim of our system is to not only make it easier for doctors to educate themselves and boost professional know-how, but also do this in a way that gets physicians back in front of patients as soon as possible."

"SumTotal's experience serving the healthcare industry is unparalleled among providers of learning and business performance technologies," added Fowler. "With more than 100 healthcare organizations as clients -- including Mayo Clinic and New York-Presbyterian Hospital -- any association or institution dedicated to practicing medicine will find we have a community of users unmatched by our competitors."
