National Health Foundation Receives Grant to Address the Growing Challenges Facing Southern California Hospitals

Posted on: Thursday, 10 November 2005, 15:00 CST

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Health Foundation (NHF) announced today that it has received a $250,000 grant from Blue Cross of California, a subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc. , to help address the growing problem related to access, quality and affordability of healthcare in California. Moreover, Blue Cross is dedicated to working with NHF on research and demonstration projects to address the growing challenges emergency rooms in hospitals throughout the Los Angeles County are facing, which is leading to the unraveling of the "safety net" that assures all Angelinos can receive needed health care.

For several years, NHF has studied the challenges facing many hospital emergency rooms throughout Los Angeles County. The Blue Cross grant will provide NHF with the needed funding to continue their research efforts. Among NHF's research findings to date are the results of their Self Pay study, which demonstrated the increased rate of admissions of uninsured patients from the public to the private sector, as a direct result of change in county policy. Additionally, through the use of their hospital impact model study, NHF has been able to demonstrate the benefits of creating a hospital-clinic partnership to decrease the use of emergency rooms for routine care by the uninsured, thus lessening the strain on emergency departments and strengthening the safety net.

The Blue Cross grant will also help to further NHF's efforts through special projects focused on finding solutions to address the many gaps in healthcare access and delivery affecting specific groups, such as the ongoing lack of services for the uninsured.

"The $250,000 grant will allow the NHF the opportunity to pursue its mission to improve the health of the underserved by creating systemic solutions to gaps in healthcare access and delivery," said Gene Grigsby, president and CEO of NHF. Furthermore, "The grant from Blue Cross will enable NHF to build upon these initiatives and launch new ones aimed at improving access to health care."
