WINDSOR, Ont. (CP) - A female nurse has been stabbed to death at a Windsor hospital and a male physician suspected in the killing is in critical condition.
The unidentified 36-year-old woman from nearby Amherstburg, Ont., was stabbed around 9 a.m. Saturday in an office area near the recovery unit of Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital, said police Staff Sgt. Ed McNorton.
A first-degree murder charge is pending against the 50-year-old suspect, who was found unconscious by police in his parked car near the Detroit river.
McNorton said officers - acting on a phone tip - found no visible signs of trauma but suspected the doctor injected an unknown substance into his own body.
Investigators recovered a knife at the hospital, where both the victim and the suspect worked.
Several other staff members were near the unit at the time of the attack but police would not say whether anyone witnessed the stabbing.
Police received information that the suspect and victim were previously involved in a romantic relationship.
"We believe that's the situation," McNorton said.
The stabbing occurred in an area away from patients, who were not at risk at any time, Insp. Jerome Brannagan said.
"It was an isolated incident that could have happened anywhere," he said.
The hospital diverted emergency services to Windsor Regional hospital for two hours after the incident, said Hotel Dieu Grace president and chief executive Neil McEvoy.
But he added the hospital quickly returned to normal operations and stressed that people should not fear seeking treatment because of the incident.
"They are safe now, as they ever were at this hospital," he said.
Hospital spokeswoman Kim Spirou said counsellors would be available to any staff or patients who need help coping with the incident.
