A CAMPAIGN to save a community hospital from closure is to be stepped up amid claims health bosses are ignoring local demands.
A 2,000-name petition, objecting to the closure of Prestatyn's 12- bed community hospital, is to go to hospital chiefs.
Organiser Veronica Wells says she is determined to continue the fight.
Earlier this week Denbighshire Local Health Board (LHB) launched its consultation on the future of the town's health services in its document, Your Voice in Your Future.
The board is putting forward four options including: Extra care housing in a new purposebuilt development with 24-hour support Accommodation in a care home A higher level of home care Care in another hospital outside the area But Mrs Wells is fuming over the four-point list.
"It's all very well asking people to choose one of four options, but they do not include the one option local people want - that the community hospital be kept and extended," she said.
Mrs Wells, who has forwarded the petition to Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones, said the 90% bed occupancy rate in the hospital showed what a valuable facility it was.
She said cost should not be a decisive factor in the hospital's future.
In the LHB booklet, the question is posed why the town can't "have a 30bedded community hospital?"
And the board's answer is there is not enough money"We must make sure that we get the best possible value from the money that we spend," says the LHB, adding the four options are all affordable.
The LHB also says while the present site could be developed it does not have money to build or staff it.
On the question of the future of staff if the hospital closes, the document says some in-patient beds will be needed for Prestatyn people but not necessarily in a hospital.
"Any new service will need to be staffed with experienced and wellqualified staff," says the LHB booklet.
A public meeting is to be held in the town on November 23
