Central DuPage Hospital Ranked Among the Top Ten Percent Nationally for Treatment of Stroke By HealthGrades

Posted on: Thursday, 17 November 2005, 12:00 CST

WINFIELD, Ill., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) has been ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for stroke treatment, according to a recent study released by HealthGrades, the nation's leading provider of independent hospital ratings. The hospital also received 5-star ratings for outstanding clinical quality in stroke treatment.

As part of its eighth annual Hospital Quality in America Study, HealthGrades independently analyzed nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide, objectively assessing their clinical outcomes and quality. The HealthGrades ratings measure whether patient outcomes are better than expected (5-Star), as expected (3-Star) or worse than expected (1-Star).

The data showed outcomes at CDH to be considerably better than the national average even though the hospital treats a larger and sicker stroke population.

"This recognition from an objective source such as HealthGrades confirms our ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in the neurosciences," said Kenneth Heaps, MD, vice president of medical affairs for the hospital. "As a result, Central DuPage Hospital has become a regional resource for advanced stroke treatment."

In the 1990s, CDH was the first hospital in the region to develop a comprehensive program to treat stroke victims with t-PA, a clot-busting drug; in June of 2005, CDH established a highly specialized program for minimally invasive surgical neuroradiology. In October, CDH became the first hospital in the U.S. to enroll a patient in a national clinical trial of a new device that appears to extend the treatment window for acute stroke victims and potentially restores blood flow to the brain.

"HealthGrades objectively rates hospitals' performance to help consumers make better health care choices, and the 5-star rating validates CDH as an outstanding provider of stroke care. The people of DuPage County should feel secure knowing they have top-notch care in their own backyard," said Samantha Collier, MD, HealthGrades vice president of medical affairs.
