AMA Offers Physicians New Resource to Help Address Health Care Disparities

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 November 2005, 12:00 CST

CHICAGO, Nov. 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced a new resource to help physicians eliminate health care disparities.

"Every physician has the opportunity to improve clinical quality by becoming more aware of potential disparities in health care due to race and ethnicity," said AMA Immediate Past President John C. Nelson, M.D., M.P.H. "Awareness and education are the first steps in overcoming the factors that lead to health care disparities among our minority patients."

"Working Together to End Racial and Ethnic Disparities: One Physician at a Time" includes tools to help physicians eliminate gaps in health care based on race and culture. Studies show that minority patients experience a lower quality of health care services and develop chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes at a higher rate than white patients.

The kit contains a DVD featuring interviews with physicians, nurses and patients discussing inequalities in health care, and a CD- ROM with facts on the components of health care disparities such as cultural competence and health literacy. The kit also includes a facilitation guide to help physicians and other health care providers work to improve the quality of care for all patients.

The kit is $10 for AMA members and $15 for nonmembers, and is available online at http://www.ama-assn.org/go/healthdisparities or by phone at 800-621-8335. "Working Together to End Racial and Ethnic Disparities: One Physician at a Time" is sponsored in part by educational grants from Washington Square Health Foundation, Inc., and Pfizer, Inc., in co-operation with the AMA Foundation.
