Helping Others is Part of Her Faith

Khandro, Twizel's 71-year-old Buddhist nun, has had a spa pool installed by Pub Charities to include in the therapies she offers.
The pool has been donated because of the free service she offers to babies.
Her work covers children's physical therapy, brain gym, massage, APS electric stimulation of muscles, heat treatments and Tai Chi.
Helping others is part of her faith. The former nurse is largely self-taught in massage, accupressure and physical therapy.
Once Khandro was Valerie Taylor, a married mum, before she was a Buddhist. She massaged her young children when they were fretful.
When she lived in isolated Halls Creek, Western Australia, word spread of her work and she became the locals' masseuse working on hands, feet, faces, colicky babies and the injured bodies of rodeo riders and bushmen.
After her 20-year marriage ended she left Twizel and became a Buddhist nun in Dunedin, but later returned to Twizel and set up her home as Blue Lotus, a place for Buddhist teaching and health treatments.
She takes several Tai Chi classes, does one-on-one remedial work with children and treats muscular aches, pains and injuries. The medical centre will suggest patients visit as part of their recovery.
As she is not a trained practitioner, but helping others is part of her code of conduct, her prices are low. Treatment for babies is free and a half-hour treatment is $15.
Khandro is always looking at new remedies and approaches. She is also pragmatic and for brain gym, (exercises co-ordinate development in both hemispheres of the brain) she happily uses a teachers' text.
As a practicing buddhist she sees nothing wrong with someone having a massage to unwind or feel good.
"We have to look after our bodies and if you relieve tension it's much healthier. That's what I'm here for."
