Birds infected with AI virus found in seven subdistricts in Jakarta
JAKARTA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Birds infected with avian influenza had been found in seven out of the 267 subdistricts in Jakarta, and more infected areas would be discovered as governmental research continued, the Jakarta Post reported on Thursday.
"We haven't conducted tests in all the subdistricts. We can only afford to conduct tests in 20 at present. We will conduct more tests in the weeks to come," the paper quoted Adnan Ahmad, official from the Jakarta Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Agency, as saying.
East Jakarta had the highest number of cases with five subdistricts infected, while North Jakarta and West Jakarta with one subdistrict each, he said.
The agency planned to cull all birds in the infected areas on Friday, he said.
"We don't want to limit the culling to several hundred meters from the infected neighborhoods only. We will kill all the birds there to avoid any risks," said Ahmad.
The virus has killed seven people and infected more than a dozen all over Indonesia, as confirmed by the laboratory of the World Health Organization in Hong Kong.
In Southeast Asia, it has claimed the lives of more than 60 out of 120-strong infected persons since its outbreak in 2003.
