Siemens Medical Solutions is Setting the Trend Again at RSNA 2005

Posted on: Sunday, 27 November 2005, 09:00 CST

Siemens Medical Solutions demonstrates how the company is setting the trend again through imaging and information technology (IT) solutions that drive efficiency and improve patient outcomes, at the 91st Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). At this event - the world's largest medical meeting being held Nov. 27 to Dec. 2 (booth #4337) in Chicago - the company will showcase its leadership in healthcare IT and molecular medicine, as well as other leading-edge imaging innovations that will enable physicians to predict and detect disease earlier.

"Siemens is leading the way in developing and bringing to market healthcare innovations that will increase the quality of life," said Dr. Erich Reinhardt, president and CEO, Siemens Medical Solutions. "The future of healthcare relies on our ability to utilize technology to understand disease earlier, develop the best treatment plans, improve clinical workflow and decrease costs - and ultimately help patients enjoy longer and healthier lives."

The Future is Molecular Medicine

Siemens has assumed a leadership role in the evolution of molecular medicine through the allocation of significant resources for research and development and its strategic partnerships. The recent acquisition of longtime partner CTI Molecular Imaging, Inc. marked a milestone in Siemens' quest to forge new paths in molecular medicine.

"Along with our customers, we see the future of healthcare in molecular medicine," said Reinhardt. "Our efforts in preclinical, clinical and biomarker solutions will help to drive the discovery of new methods for diagnosis and treatment of disease."

Molecular medicine is expected to assist physicians and researchers in the understanding of the root causes of disease, rather than simply managing the resulting conditions. Siemens is taking the lead in developing a comprehensive set of diagnostic tools that include molecular imaging techniques that will enable pre-symptomatic and early disease detection.

"We expect molecular imaging will lead not only to improved clinical outcomes, but also could initiate a dramatic shift in the delivery of healthcare from 'managing sickness' to a focus on maintaining wellness," said Michael Reitermann, president, Molecular Imaging Division, Siemens Medical Solutions.

Trendsetting in Healthcare IT

As connectivity and interoperability continue to drive the healthcare discussions from Washington, D.C., to points around the globe, Siemens is leading the way with solutions that help link physicians and patients, as well as all of the clinical information about a patient, throughout the healthcare continuum. Visitors to the Siemens RSNA booth will learn about the role of syngo(R) and Soarian(R) in delivering end-to-end workflow capabilities, while providing the foundation for an electronic health record by allowing real-time access to the complete patient record, including images and data.

As the first major diagnostic technology vendor to provide a comprehensive portfolio of integrated imaging and IT solutions, Siemens has attained a string of trendsetting achievements in healthcare IT, including:

-- Siemens acquired Shared Medical Systems in 2000, a strategic move that merged Siemens' imaging expertise with a company with established leadership in healthcare IT.

-- Since launching Soarian - the core element of its new generation IT strategy - Siemens remains the only vendor to develop a net new, Web-based, workflow-driven health information system (HIS).

-- Today, more than 100 healthcare facilities are live on Soarian modules. Soarian is the only HIS with a workflow engine that integrates IT, modality and communication solutions.

-- Siemens has expanded the successful syngo image management platform, including integrated Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), with unprecedented linkages to Soarian. This brings together all Siemens software into a single instrument to support patient care.

Seeing is Believing

From molecular medicine to solutions in imaging and IT, the future of healthcare relies on the ability to understand disease earlier, improve patient outcomes and decrease costs. Diagnostic imaging innovations from Siemens are integral to this process and vital for the continuum of care. The company's technological advancements in diagnostic imaging - including X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography (CT) and molecular imaging - will be demonstrated at RSNA 2005. A key attraction at the Siemens booth will be the SOMATOM Definition(TM), the world's first dual source CT system, which was introduced to the market less than two weeks ago. The first system to incorporate two X-ray sources and two detectors, the Definition provides two data sets that allow doctors to differentiate, characterize, isolate and distinguish body tissues and fluids, providing unmatched image resolution and the most detailed diagnosis.

Siemens Medical Solutions of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) with headquarters in Malvern, Pennsylvania and Erlangen, Germany, is one of the largest suppliers to the healthcare industry in the world.
