Hot Flashes in the Boardroom; 74% of Women Say Menopause is Affecting Their Work Life

Female baby boomers are dominating the work force these days, accounting for almost half the working population, according to a recent survey. And since many of these women will be forced to work well past the retirement age, managing menopausal symptoms has become more important than ever for women looking to fight hot flashes in the boardroom.
Seventy-four percent of women said at least one symptom of menopause, mostly hot flashes and night sweats, were disruptive to their work lives, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Female Executives. Almost half of the women (45 percent) noted that menopause symptoms were worse than they expected.
"Menopause can have side effects that are extremely disruptive to women's professional and personal lives. Hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats, low libido, mood swings and chronic fatigue can all happen at inappropriate times, making it difficult for a woman to carry on with her daily routine," says Dr. Gary Gallo, physician for BodyLogicMD, a network of anti-aging physicians specializing in treating male and female menopause with natural bioidentical hormones.
Donna Cook, a conference services manager, said she panicked when she started experiencing hot flashes in the boardroom.
"While presenting to our senior management team I felt a hot flash coming on. I was so concerned about turning red and sweating that I lost track of what I was saying. When I lost my train of thought, I became more stressed, which in turn, made my symptoms worse," said Cook.
Like Cook, millions of working women are looking for safe ways to reduce menopausal symptoms, but studies show that the information women are receiving on hormone therapy is confusing and hard to follow.
"Women are being bombarded with a host of conflicting messages about hormone therapy and menopause and it can be very confusing," says Gallo. "Many women are concerned that hormone therapy may cause cancer and other diseases, because of information released by the Women's Health Initiative."
The most important thing for women to understand is that there is a big difference between synthetic hormones and bioidentical hormones, according to medical experts.
Synthetic hormones act as toxins in the body because they are not metabolized the same way human "bioidentical" hormones are metabolized, says Gallo. Common synthetic hormones like Premarin and Provera are chemically different from bioidentical hormones and can cause diseases. Premarin is from pregnant mare urine and contains Equine Estrogens.
However, bioidentical hormones are exact replicas of hormones that are produced by humans. They're made from soy, yams and other plant extracts.
In addition to relieving unpleasant menopausal symptoms, natural hormone therapy can actually protect against obesity and other diseases, including cancer and Alzheimer's.
"At BodyLogicMD, our physicians examine every patient closely, evaluating symptoms and using laboratory tests to determine each patient's customized dose," says Gallo. "Patients started on hormones are tested as necessary to monitor dosing."
Within as little as one month of using bioidentical hormones, women will start to notice a significant decrease in their symptoms.
"It's a safer and more effective way to get menopausal symptoms under control and to have women back in the boardroom functioning at peak performance."
