European Commission approves huge funds to fight animal diseases BRUSSELS, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission has approved a financial package of 185 million euros (222 million US dollars) to support programs to eradicate, control and monitor animal diseases in 2006, the EC announced here on Wednesday.
The executive of the European Union (EU) said as many as 129 programs have been approved for EU funding. The programs tackle animal diseases that impact both human and animal health.
"We are dedicating important resources in 2006 to fight animal diseases. Today's decision reflects our on-going commitment to supporting disease eradication, preventive action, and pro-active monitoring," said Markos Kyprianou, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection.
Each year the EC approves programs for the eradication and monitoring of animal diseases, for the control of zoonoses such as salmonella, and for the monitoring and eradication of TSEs. These approved programs receive financial contributions from the EU.
